MPEG-1, MPEG-2, and MPEG-4
MPEG is a standard file format developed by the Moving Picture Experts Group and
consists of a number of different flavors. We mainly encode in MPEG 1 & 2, and these
are used for totally different situations.
MPEG-1 is now quite an old format, however material encoded in this format can be
played back on the majority of computers, without the need for additional software.
We tend to use this format on CD ROM presentations that require the addition of video
material.
MPEG-2 is the file format used on DVD or Digital Versatile Discs, and this allows
us to produce very high quality video clips onto either CD ROM, or more usually DVD
discs.
MPEG-4 (ASP & AVC or H.264) is the next-generation, global multimedia standard,
delivering professional-quality audio and video streams over a wide range of bandwidths,
from cell phone to broadband and beyond’. This ISO/IEC standardised format features cross platform
compatibility and small file sizes.
Windows Media
Windows Media Technologies is Microsoft's "streaming" media format, and like
RealSystem, offers real-time playback of both video and audio over the internet.
Real Networks
RealSystem is a "streaming" media format developed by RealNetworks and offers an
effective real-time delivery solution for both video and audio over the internet.
QuickTime
QuickTime is Apple's multimedia file format, and although it can be used for
"streaming" over the internet, we tend to use QuickTime mainly for CD ROM
presentations that require high quality video content.
